One wouldn’t readily associate the religion of Islam with condoms, massage oils, and water-based lubricants, but an online Islamic sex shop may change that. Halal Sex Shop, a website dedicated to selling those products has launched for the first time in Turkey – where over 90% of the population is registered Muslim. The established presence of the religion dates back as far as the 11th Century. So how will Halal maintain the sanctity of faith, provide sex products, and a forum for discussions of sex, in a country where the prime minister, Tayyip Erdogan, has shown an ultra conservative view of the religion? Haluk Murat Demirel, who launched the site, promises that all its products are sold in compliance with Islamic doctrines:

“The religion of Islam has praised sex under certain circumstances,” they wrote on the site.

“The use of every product on sale is in compliance with Islam.”

“Online sex shops usually have pornographic pictures, which makes Muslims uncomfortable. We don’t sell vibrators for example, because they are not approved by Islam”

In a region where there are few sex shops, the site’s launch Tuesday has proven wildly popular. To date, the site already has 33,000 hits.
